The "Open" Signal: Why Your Business Disappears After 5 PM
Picture this scenario:
It’s 5:30 PM on a Tuesday. A potential customer in your city just had a pipe burst, or maybe they just realized they need a last-minute gift. They pull out their phone and search for your exact service.
You have the most 5-star reviews in town. You have been in business for 20 years. You should be the first result they see. But you are nowhere to be found.
Instead, the #1 spot goes to a competitor with a 3.8-star rating who started six months ago.
Why? Because you told Google you close at 5:00 PM.
The "Openness" Update Changed Everything
Google made a massive shift recently that most business owners completely missed. It’s called the "Openness Signal."
Here is the logic: When a user searches on Google Maps, they usually want a solution right now. Google’s algorithm decided that showing a "Closed" business—even a highly rated one—is a bad user experience.
If I search for "Plumber" at 6 PM, I don't want a list of plumbers who will open at 8 AM tomorrow. I want someone who picks up the phone now.
The Hard Truth: If your Google Business Profile says you are "Closed," Google effectively de-ranks you during those hours. You are invisible to the evening crowd.

Are You Leaving Money on the Table?
This is the "Silent Killer" of local revenue.
I audited a client recently who was a locksmith. He listed his hours as 9 AM – 5 PM because that’s when his shop was open. But he actually took emergency calls until 9 PM.
For four hours every single day (5 PM – 9 PM), he was handing his customers to his competitors on a silver platter.
We changed his hours to 9 AM – 9 PM. His call volume doubled overnight. No new photos. No new reviews. Just telling Google, "Yes, I am here."
How to Fix This (Without Lying)
Do NOT just set your business to "Open 24 Hours" if you aren't actually answering the phone. If a customer drives to your shop at 10 PM and it's dark, or calls you and gets voicemail, they will leave a nasty 1-star review, and Google will crush you.
Here is the strategy:
- Audit Your Real Availability: If you have an answering service or a cell phone you pick up after hours, extend your hours on your profile.
- Use "Special Hours": If you are staying late for a holiday sale or a specific season, update your "Special Hours" section. Google loves active profiles.
- The "Appointment Only" Hybrid: If you don't have a storefront, you have more flexibility. If you are willing to take a lead at 7 PM, list yourself as open until 7 PM.
Stop guessing. Be open.
