How the Local 3 Pack actually decides who ranks
The real signals behind Map Pack rankings, and the ones most local businesses get wrong.
Technical
Speed, structure, and schema problems that visitors never see but Google definitely does.
You can have great reviews, a strong Business Profile, and a genuinely better business than your competitor, and still lose rankings to problems no visitor ever notices. Technical issues are the silent ceiling on a lot of local businesses, and because they are invisible on the surface, they go unfixed for years.
When Map Winners takes on a new site, a technical audit is one of the first things we run, because it usually surfaces the fastest wins available.
Slow pages lose both rankings and leads, and the damage is worst on mobile, which is where most local searches happen. Google uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, as real ranking inputs. A page that takes several seconds to become usable frustrates visitors and tells Google the experience is poor.
We take this seriously enough that we rebuilt our own site around it. The same principles, fast loading, minimal blocking scripts, and properly sized images, apply to every client site we touch.
Google has to be able to understand your site before it can rank it. Messy URLs, thin or duplicate location pages, broken links, and missing internal links all get in the way. If your important pages are hard to find or hard to interpret, they compete with one hand tied behind their back.
Clean structure, a logical page for each service and location, and sensible internal linking make the whole site easier to rank.
Structured data, or schema, is code that tells Google and AI tools exactly what your business is, where it operates, and what it offers. Local business, service, and FAQ schema help you show up in richer results and, increasingly, get quoted by AI answers.
Every page Map Winners builds includes the right schema, so the machines never have to guess what they are looking at.
Your name, address, and phone number (NAP) need to match everywhere they appear online. When directories and old listings disagree, they split your signals and undermine trust. Cleaning up inconsistent citations is unglamorous, but it is frequently the single fastest ranking lift we find.
You cannot fix what you cannot see, which is the whole problem with technical issues. A proper technical audit surfaces the speed, structure, schema, and citation problems that are holding a site back, and turns invisible ceilings into a punch list. Map Winners runs one on every new engagement.
Some of the biggest ranking jumps I have seen came from boring fixes: a faster site, consistent citations, and the right schema. Invisible to customers, obvious to Google.

A technical audit is the only reliable way to see them, because they are invisible on the surface. It checks speed, structure, schema, and citation consistency and turns the findings into a clear list of fixes.
Often it helps a lot, especially when a site has been held back for a long time. Technical health works together with your profile, reviews, and content. Map Winners fixes the foundation first so everything else performs better.
A thorough audit at the start of an engagement, then periodic checks, catches new issues before they cost you. Sites drift over time as pages, plugins, and listings change.
