# How the Local 3 Pack actually decides who ranks

The real signals behind Map Pack rankings, and the ones most local businesses get wrong.

By **Buddy Rathmell**, Founder of Map Winners · 6 min read

The Local 3 Pack, the three Google Business Profiles that sit under the map on a local search, is where most buying decisions start. Those three spots capture the large majority of clicks and calls, so where you land in them is often the difference between a busy week and a quiet one.

Google fills the 3 Pack using three factors it has stated plainly: relevance, distance, and prominence. Almost everything you read about Map rankings is a version of one of those three. At Map Winners we have optimized profiles across dozens of local industries, and the businesses that win are the ones that treat these three as levers, not luck.

## Relevance: does your profile match the search

Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone typed. The single strongest lever here is your **primary category**. Google leans on it heavily to decide which searches you are even eligible to rank for. A tree service that sets its primary category to a vague option instead of the exact one leaves money on the table before the race even starts.

Your services, business description, products, and the content on your website all feed relevance too. When we audit a new profile, the first question is simple: does the primary category match the exact search that drives revenue for this business. Fixing that one field is frequently the fastest lift available.

## Distance: closer is not always the winner

Distance is measured from the searcher to your listed address or service area. You cannot pick up your building and move it, so this feels like the factor you cannot influence. In practice you have more control than you think.

A properly configured service area, consistent citations across the web, and content that proves you serve a given town all widen your effective radius. We see it constantly: a strong, well built profile outranks a closer but neglected competitor three towns over. Distance matters, but it never works alone.

## Prominence: the reputation signal that compounds

Prominence is Google's read on how well known and trusted you are. It is fed by reviews (quantity, how recently they arrived, how fast they arrive, and the words inside them), links and mentions across the web, and how people engage with your listing.

Prominence is where the compounding happens. A steady flow of genuine reviews beats a one time push every time, because Google rewards recency and momentum. This is why the Map Winners playbook builds a review system that runs quietly in the background rather than a scramble every few months.

## The signals people get wrong

Most self inflicted ranking problems come from a short list of mistakes:

- **Stuffing keywords into the business name.** It violates Google's guidelines and risks a suspension.
- **Buying or gating reviews.** Google detects and removes fake reviews, and can suspend the profile.
- **Duplicate or ghost listings.** Old suites and closed branches split your signals and confuse customers.
- **The wrong primary category**, or a hidden address that is set up incorrectly for a service area business.

There is no secret button, and anyone selling you one is really selling you risk.

## Key takeaways

- Google ranks the 3 Pack on relevance, distance, and prominence. Everything else is a version of those three.
- Your primary category is the strongest single relevance lever. Match it to the search that makes you money.
- You cannot move your building, but a real service area setup and citations widen your effective radius.
- Steady, genuine reviews build prominence and compound over time. A one time burst does not.
- Avoid name stuffing, fake reviews, and duplicate listings. They cap rankings or risk suspension.

I have watched a business jump into the 3 Pack in a market it had ignored for years, purely by fixing its primary category and cleaning up duplicate listings. The fundamentals still win.

## Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank in the 3 Pack?

It depends on your market and starting point. Category and listing fixes can move things in weeks, while prominence built on reviews and citations compounds over a few months. Map Winners sets expectations honestly after auditing your specific market.

Does distance mean I can only rank near my address?

No. Distance is one of three factors. A well built profile with a proper service area, strong reviews, and consistent citations regularly outranks closer but weaker competitors in nearby towns.

Can I rank without a physical storefront?

Yes. Service area businesses like tree care, contractors, and mobile services rank well when the profile is set up correctly, including hiding the address per Google's rules.
